WWW-20 Server Replacement – 23 August

Linux server WWW-20 is reaching the end of its useful life. The current server has served us very well for three years, but for the sake of continued reliability we will be replacing it with brand new hardware over the weekend. We plan to replace the server hardware on Saturday night (South African time) and have everything back online on Sunday morning.

IP address assignments and login details will remain unchanged from the current. Where there are changes, we will communicate the relevant information directly to affected clients.

There will be some interruption of service, most notably with email. We apologise for any inconvenience this my cause. Rest assured that we will take utmost care to ensure everything is perfect on Sunday morning.

Maintenance schedule:

Date: Saturday 23 August into Sunday 24 August

Expected downtime

Websites will be accessible for most of the time during the migration. However, to avoid loss of incoming email, we will shut down the SMTP service for the duration of the migration.

Update on Friday at 15:40 GMT

In preparation of the migration, we have now disabled access to the Installatron Application Installer in cPanel. This to insure the integrity of individual application configurations and backups. The service will be restored again as soon as the new server is live.

Update Saturday at 15:50 GMT

The new server is in tip-top shape and we will commence with the migration in approximately one hour. To prevent loss of incoming email, we will stop the SMTP service. Websites will continue to display as normal, but we advise against updating any content until we have complete the migration.

Update  Saturday at 17:40 GMT

Migration has started and going smoothly so far.

The SMTP service is now shut down for incoming email. Should you need to send email, please use your ISP’s SMTP service or use our secondary SMTP service on port 587.

Update Saturday at  19:00 GMT

Smooth as butter. We are about 1/3 through the process and no significant issues so far.

Update Saturday 19:50 GMT

Update Saturday  at 20:20 GMT

We have completed the transfer of all websites; only a few final touch-ups remain. All services should function normally for all users. Please contact us if you detect any problems.

There was a lingering issue with the certificate of the POP/IMAP server; we have corrected this now.
