Cape Town server outage – 13 March

The Cape Town data centre experienced an electrical outage and generator failure. As a result, all servers were powered down for about 40 minutes. The problem has since been resolved.

Initial report 19:48:
Server outage detected.

Update 20:00 GMT:
Electrical problem confirmed.

Update 20:35:
All services back to normal.

At 19h42 on 13 March 2020 our Cape Town data centre (DC3) experienced a power disruption….

What happened:
Our backup generator experienced a failure during scheduled Eskom load-shedding. The battery backup power was able to sustain the load initially but was depleted before engineers were able to resolve the generator failure. The generator is currently being attended to by engineers and will be repaired ahead of the next scheduled load-shedding.

 

Power was restored at 20h17…..
