WWW-19 Server Replacement – 17 January

The replacement of Linux server WWW-19 was postponed to Friday and Saturday 23 and 24 January.

Original message
We are continuing our series of sever hardware upgrades. The second item of business is the replacement of Linux server WWW-19. The server has been a reliable platform to our resellers for the past 3.5 years. The scheduled hardware upgrade ensures continued reliability and adds more hosting capacity. Site migration is scheduled for Saturday 17 January.

With the vast majority of the sites on the server belonging to South African reseller clients, we will perform the migration during the South African night time.

We will migrate all services (websites, databases, and email) over to the new server. There will be some interruption of service; we apologise for any inconvenience this my cause. Rest assured that we will take utmost care to ensure everything works perfectly the following morning.

The name of the new server is WWW-27; you will notice this name in the SSL certificate when you visit cPanel and Webmail.

We are migrating existing sub-networks to the new server. IP addresses will thus remain unchanged. (There are a few exceptions where IP addresses will change; we will contact the affected clients directly.) You therefore do not need to make any changes to your email, FTP or SSH settings. However, if you have a browser bookmark for cPanel or Webmail that uses the server name, you will need to update it with the new server name.

Maintenance window:
Saturday 18:00 to Sunday 06:00 SAST
Saturday 16:00 to Sunday 04:00 GMT
Saturday 05:00 to 23:00 EDT
Saturday 8:00 to 20:00 PDT

Update Saturday 02:20
We are less than 14 hours away from starting the migration. All systems go!

Update Saturday 17:00
Migration is in progress. First up are accounts on IP addresses 41.204.209.187-191.

Update Saturday 19:20
Processing IP addresses 41.204.209.180-186.

Update Saturday 20:30
Processing IP addresses 41.204.209.176-179.
The 41.204.209.176-191 subnet re-assignment will occur in the next hour. There may be some dead time for the affected IP addresses.

Update Saturday 22:45
Processing IP addresses 41.204.209.172-175.
As a precautionary measure, we are now disabling the SMTP service for incoming email. This will prevent loss of incoming email when a domain is being migrated to the new server while its IP address is still assigned to the old server.

Update Sunday 00:05
Getting into 41.204.209-168-171 now.
Working on a delay with the re-assignment of previous subnets. Websites will still load from the old server for the time being.

Update Sunday 01:15
Struggling with a stubborn subnet re-assignment. Both servers going for a quick reboot…

Update Sunday 03:10
We will be starting with the final subnet 41.204.209.164-169 shortly. This subnet contains many accounts; we almost certainly run later than the scheduled time.

Update Sunday 03:30
It has become clear that we will be unable to complete the migration in the scheduled window. We have been troubled with unexpected slow network speed between the servers (which also slowed down the respective public networks) and problems with re-assigning the subnets. At this time we have reverted all subnets back to the old server and re-enabled all services.

An new migration schedule (like Friday and Saturday 24 January) will follow in due course.
