Cape Town Data Centre Emergency Power Maintenance – 23 December

The Cape Town Data Centre (Xneelo, Belville) will perform emergency power maintenance on Friday, 23 December 2022. This may possibly affect service.

On 22 December, the generator at the data centre began overheating. To ensure uninterrupted operation, emergency maintenance is required. The maintenance will be performed on Friday, 23 December between 08:30 – 22:00 SAST. The actual work is expected to not exceed eight hours.

Impact of load-shedding
Maintenance has been scheduled according to the current load-shedding schedule of Stage 3. Should the load-shedding stage increase to Stage 4, disruption to power is a possibility. The data centre technician assured us that they will do our utmost to prevent an interruption of service during the maintenance period.

If Stage 4 load shedding is activated, it will occur from 14:00 – 16:30 SAST. In that event, we will shut down all servers at 13:45 to avoid corruption of hard drives or other hardware damage.

Status updates
We will monitor the schedule and post updates (if Stage 4 becomes apparent) here.

Update 08:00: Looks like Stage 3 for today, so all should be OK

Update 17:00: All done with no impact on service. Well done to Xneelo!
